Jaisalmer means “The Hill Fort of Jaisal” and the name of the city is named after its founder Rawal Jaisal, a Bhati Rajput who founded the city in 1156 A.D. City is very much close to Pakistan frontier on western side. The city is also called The Golden City because the yellow sand gives a yellowish-golden touch to the city & its surrounding area. Jaisalmer stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples. Today this city is famous for its intricately carved havelis, sand dunes, thar deserts and old Jain temples.
